This project seeks to take advantage of a site in Toronto that was recently rezoned from residential to employment lands. Operating within this new zoning envelope, i2 Stack maximizes both it’s allowable gross floor area and building height through a series of stacked volumes. The recessed and stepped profile of these volumes from the front of the site help to break down and minimize the elevation so as not to overwhelm the adjacent house to the north, while the cantilevered stacking on the south face affords passive shading and figuration to primary face of the project overlooking a small park. With a cafe on ground level and an open-plan throughout, this mass-timber building is intended to present a new paradigm for future development of employment lands in the city which will put issues of sustainability at the forefront.
