The Midwives Collective of Toronto has worked as a group practice providing community based midwifery care in Toronto since 1983. Having been bursting at the seams with midwives, students, families, staff, and babies in their former Dupont Street location, a move was in order. Working with the group to transform a former internet cafe on Bloor Street West into a vibrant community resource has been a pleasure. The project was completed with phased funding from the Province, implemented over two periods of construction within the same fiscal year. A full assessment of their spatial requirements for clients, medical equipment and protocols, staff, trainees, and assistants was completed and paired with an analysis of the funding resources against construction costs. Bright clinic rooms were created in a former concrete block garage, clean, resilient materials were used in the high traffic areas, and storage and group work spaces were carved out of the upper and lower levels.
