Smoke Tray

Smoke Tray is an investigation of dynamic simulation and subtractive fabrication techniques. The underlying surface of the tray was derived from a geometric deformation resulting from a study of an animated particle based system. Seen from above, the tray reads as a rectangular field of dense, transverse striations as a result of the oblique lamination of the aviation plywood. Seen from below, the parallel striations give way to the deformed surface. Here, displacement affects both pattern and geometry while the rigid top plane of the tray floats above.
